Introduction

Neo File Manager offers the possibility to organize and catalog volumes, folders and files from different media, such as network hard drive, zip disks, cd-rom, ram disks, floppies, etc. Once scanned and inside the database, the collections can be browsed, searched limiting the results by collection, description, date, size, and more.
Other possibilities include search for duplicated files, opening or copying them, hiding or showing items by password protection and principally helping detect duplicated files for new backup copies.

Basic Functionality

Adding collections
Insert a cd-rom, zip disk, etc. into the drive and from the Actions menu click Add Collection, and then choose the wished drive or folder. The media will be scanned and once finished it will be showned in the main window, ready for your utility. Every collection you add, will receive a reference number which will be shown beside the name in the main window for your organization.
If you try to add an already added collection to the database, a window will appear warning you that the collection will be updated and will give you the choice to cancel the action. In case the collection is added, it will receive a new reference number.
In the pop up window where you select the drive you wish to inspect, you will find a checkbox that reads "Add only reference. Not include files or folders". As you scan more collections, obviously your database expands in bytes in your computer, but you can minimize this by selecting this option. It will only add to your database the title and reference number for your knowledge, but it will not include files and folders in it. This can be useful for game or system cd´s.

Deleting Collections
Once a collection is added in the database, it can be removed by clicking Remove collection in the Actions menu.

Searching
Searching inside collections can be very useful and save lots of time. Search can be limited by the chosen collections, not chosen or all the collections; by the name or characters, or by the size or date. These options can be combined with other checkboxes such as System File, Hidden File, Folder and expand the search to hidden items.
The result will be shown in a new window with the similar items on top and once the desired item is clicked on, it will show you the path and collection where it belongs. By double clicking the item it will ask for the original media where it belongs and then it will be opened.

Opening Items
Files can be opened by clicking Open in the Item menu or by double clicking. You will be asked to insert the original media in order to open it or in case the media is available, it will immediately open it.
Files can also be opened with selected programs by choosing them Open with option.
Opening items in new windows allows you to view different collections or folders side by side.

Copy To
Selecting a file and then clicking in Copy To in the Item menu, will save the file in the folder you select, after inserting the original media.

Look for duplicates
Look for duplicates in the Item menu is a fast and useful tool for comparing files and finding identical items with the same date and size in the collections. You must first select the file you want and then press the Look for Duplicates, and in a new window it will display the identical items found in the collections scanned.

Hide & Show
Items or collections can be hidden by selecting the Hide option under the Item menu, and later on can be displayed by selecting Show under the Item menu. The hidden files will remain invisible for the search and look for duplicates commands until they become visible by the Show command. To hide or unhide an item you will be asked for a password.

Properties
The Properties command for files displays a window with the Name, File Type, Path, Size and creation date and modified date. In case you refer to folder Properties, you also obtain the amount of folders and files it contains. In this window, you can add a description to the collection, which is the name displayed for the collection, and it can be different from the name itself.

Backup Database
In case your database expands you will have the chance to backup your Neo File Manager collection list in a .bak file so that you can restore your collection in a future occasion by the Restore Backup command.

Intelligent Backup

Making a backup can sometimes take you a long time just to figure out which files are not already backed up. Detecting those files is one of Neo File Managerīs powerful capabilities, offering different function options like listing, copying or moving files to a specific folder.

Comparing is not only limited to scanned collections, but to hard drive, external unit or specific folders too, which may be in a local or network root.
Your first move must be to select the 2nd Location (where you can select a local folder, hard drive, external Unit or a collection) which you want to compare. Then you must select the 2nd Location you want to compare with (which must be an already scanned collection).
Your third action must be to select the comparing parameters Neo File Manager will use to find these files, such as name, length or creation date.
Your fourth and last move must be to decide what to do with the results. Your options are included in a "combo box" with these options:

  • List duplicated
  • Copy duplicated to
  • Move duplicated to
  • List not duplicated
  • Copy not duplicated to
  • Move not duplicated to

If you copy or move the duplicated files to a specific folder, they will be ready for you to make the new backup instantly.
